shopping cost.   How to make your own
yogurt? Here is the simple recipe.

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Yield: Homemade Yogurt serve for 4 or 8 people

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (1 quart) milk
  • 1/5 cup of plain yogurt with active cultures
  • 4 containers with lid

Preparation:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, heat the milk to 185°F. Do not let it boil. Look for some movement of the liquid but no bubbles breaking on the surface. Hold the milk at 185°F for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove milk from heat and let cool to 115°F.
  3. Divided the plain yogurt to 4 and add to container and whisk well yogurt (room temperature).
  4. Add 1/2 cup of the milk to container and stir well with yogurt. Cover, wrap them in a towel, and let sit in a warm place for 8 hours or overnight. Normally put them into oven but heat is off. In the winter time you can keep them near by the heating vents.
  5. Refrigerate until cold and thickened slightly.
  6. Serve with Home Made Honey Raspberry Jam.

It is soooooo yummy.

Note that homemade yogurt is thinner than most store-bought varieties. If you like thicker yogurt, there are two options:

  • Strain the yogurt through a cheesecloth-lined sieve or coffee filter. Line a sieve with cheesecloth or a coffee filter and set over a large bowl. Put the yogurt in the sieve, cover, and let strain overnight in the refrigerator.
  • Add 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder (organic versions are available) to the milk when you heat it. More milk solids, which is what dry milk powder is, will create a firmer texture.
